The historical beginning of Dog n Suds dates back to 1953 in Champaign, Illinois when two music teachers from the University of Illinois opened a hot dog and root beer stand. 

Almost overnight Dog n Suds drive-in restaurants began springing up all over Illinois, and rapidly spread to the adjoining states of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

Dog n Suds growth was so phenomenal in the 1950's that one of the larger national restaurant magazines called Dog n Suds "one of the soundest investments in the restaurant field, and one of the best, well-run franchise companies in the country".

By the mid 1970's, Dog n Suds had grown to almost 600 restaurants located in 38 states and Canada.  During its "glory days", Dog n Suds was opening an average of 15 new restaurants each month!      

Dog n Suds Corporation elected to merge with a smaller East Cost based organization that ran Drive Ins and made root beer products. As a consequence, new management decisions resulted in store closings and the ultimate dissolving of the franchise. Only 11 original “Old Timer” restaurants remained in the world. It was indeed a "sad day" for the once proud and mighty Rover and Dog n Suds franchise.

Richmond Dog n Suds was opened in 1963 by a local family and has always been a small family owned business. The restaurant was sold in the fall of 2005 to another Richmond family, with a strong commitment to food quality, friendly service, and the determination to retain the nostalgic atmosphere which made this Drive In such a success.

After 2005, they refurbished the interior and exterior of the business paying close attention to architectural standards used in 1963. They also added many new events. Look for Live Music, Cruise Nights, and many specials designed for the whole family to enjoy a pleasant change from today’s interpretation of fast food dining.

In 2014, the Richmond Dog N Suds was sold to a new, young and motivated owner who is dedicated to keeping the Dog N Suds name and atmosphere alive.

In 2019 the previous owners bought the business back and they have been successful in keeping that classic feel. Dedicated to the unique Richmond dining experience - with improved menu - Dog n Suds is in great hands!   

Step back in time and come visit us, meet our fabulous Car Hops and enjoy some of the Worlds Creamiest Root Beer, served in a frosty mug, along with a Foot Long Coney Dog, Texas Burger and some of the best appetizers around! If it is desserts you like, you will find a favorite among our over 30 different flavors of Shakes, Malts and Sundaes.

We also have installed a drive through order system for our customers in a hurry. Our season is March through October, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm daily, see you soon!
